Thinking Buildings were appointed by Hawkins projects Limited to provide technical design and coordination for this £8 million laundry facility in Dartford. The laundry is currently set up to process 750,000 pieces of laundry per week.
Thinking Buildings role was to take the 3D models for the building shell, the laundry machines, laundry transport system and the internal steel supporting frame, which were each produced by a different sub-contractor, and combine them into a single model and manage the co-ordination of all the service routes. With a very tight construction phase, and a hard completion date for the end user client, setting out the co-ordination of the services in a virtual environment was key in the success of the project for our client.
The project was conceived with a planned expansion for 1.4 million pieces per week, and the future service routes were also laid out to ensure that the first phase installations did not result in clashes at a later stage.
This was a project that really exploited our use of 3D BIM to communicate the strategy across the design and construction teams, and that clearly contributed to a successful outcome for the main contractor.
