We’re excited to announce that our luxury car sales site in Leicestershire is progressing well, with Thinking Buildings tasked to develop the detailed design and support the tendering process. The focus is on sustainability, with solar PV, EV vehicles, rainwater harvesting, and barn-inspired architecture. @Hillmoren specialises in high-value luxury cars, especially Tesla, operating as a private company with limited site visitors by appointment only. 5 Years For Jess!

We are very pleased to say that our Architectural Technologist, Jessica Moore, is celebrating being with us here at Thinking Buildings for 5 years! Jess graduated from The University of Derby with a BSc in Architectural Technology and Practice, and joined us in 2019.

Based in our Derbyshire team, Jess was recently heavily involved in the design of the new Post 16 building at John Port Spencer Academy, where she opened the facility earlier in the year. This was a notable event, as Jess was previously a pupil at the school, exemplifying what is possible to the pupils.

Jess has also enjoyed working on the interesting timber framed office building we are designing in the Falklands for Consolidated Fisheries, and the luxury car showroom under development for Hillmoren. She is currently doing great work on another Spencer Academies project, Heanor Gate Spencer Academy.

Fabulous projects Jess, thank you, we look forward to the next five years!

Our Education project spotlight continues with the

Our Education project spotlight continues with the new sixth form building at Alexandra Park School in Haringey, London. Construction is set to begin this summer on the site, located in Metropolitan Open Land. Planning approval was obtained through a clear strategy and engagement with the authorities. The building will offer seminar rooms, study spaces, and a large social area, expected to be ready for use by September 2025.

We’re excited to share our latest project update on our collaboration with an existing client in the #carehome sector. Our work focuses on managing historic buildings in sensitive environments like care homes. The project includes alterations to doors for easier resident access, creating new staff spaces, converting an outbuilding into a kitchen and laundry, and improving residents' quality of life.

New case study! #thinkingbuildings have been working with this client over a number of years, first to design a new farmhouse, which opened up the site for this development.

The farm already operates a number of #holidaylet cottages, and the new building works with these to form a courtyard arrangement working with agricultural forms to create a modern “farmyard” development.

It’s not all work this month as we just returned from a great trip in the #LakeDistrict for our annual #summer get together. We visited the cathedral cave, went Canadian canoeing, and cooked on a beautiful island. Some of us climbed Scafell Pike, making for a strong #teambuilding exercise. The trip was a much-needed break before the busy months ahead.

We have a new #casestudy to share! Our latest website addition to the developer housing projects is a #GradeII* listed building conversion. The original schoolhouse in central historic #Cirencester was repurposed by #Thinking Buildings due to declining use and disrepair. The project received listed building consent for both six apartments and two #townhouses. Somewhere in the world a person develops #dementia

Somewhere in the world a person develops #dementia every 3 minutes. There were over 55 million people worldwide living with dementia in 2020. This number will almost double every 20 years, reaching 78 million in 2030 and 139 million in 2050. 900,000 in the UK are diagnosed as living with dementia and the youngest person diagnosed with the disease was just 4 years old. Unbelievably, many local authority #carehomes face closure.

We have been collaborating with a #Derbyshire care home provider for over 3 years. They recognised the need for an extension to one of their care homes to address the lack of specialist dementia care spaces in the area. We are pleased the extension scheme has been approved by Derbyshire Dales District Council, allowing for our development of a modern care facility to cater to those in need.

New Case Study – Passivhaus Home
The latest addition to our detailed case studies is this fantastic house in South Staffordshire.

The house replaced an existing cottage on the site, which had been repeatedly, unsympathetically extended, and suffered from damp, and poor insulation. The client asked us to use Passivhaus principles to create a modern, high-performance replacement dwelling.

The local authority required a limit on the mass of the first floor accommodation, which presented some potential conflict with the aim for Passivhaus standards. Passivhaus performance is much easier to achieve with a regular and compact form, so having a larger ground floor than first floor increased the number of potential junctions for thermal bridging, presenting technical challenges for the energy performance. In the end, we were able to balance the elements of both the planning system, and thermal performance, to create a contemporary home.

This project has a number of interesting low-energy features including thin bed clay block, triple glazed windows, and an energy earth bank combined with a ground source heat pump. Click here to learn more about these and more on the full case study page.

Marlborough moves to technical design
It’s been a busy start to 2024 with numerous education projects coming forward for Thinking Buildings.

Technical design has just started on the proposed expansion of The Marlborough School in Woodstock. The works include a new 6-classroom teaching block, internal re-modelling and reconfiguration of existing spaces, a new sports changing room extension, and significant re-working of the existing entrance to improve parking and coach provision. This is a fantastic project, developed in conjunction with Oxfordshire County Council and the River Learning Trust to expand this excellent school.

This is one of a number of exciting education projects currently in design. This week we also completed feasibility stage proposals for a new £6 million swimming pool for an independent school. There are exciting and busy times ahead for our education team.
