Thinking Buildings designed this super contemporary home for a private client in Old Town Swindon. Planning permission had already been obtained for a traditionally styled 5 bedroom detached dwelling on a gap site in an existing residential area. Our client wanted to develop a more unique and contemporary home with a striking modernist design. Working with the planning officer and the Council’s urban design advisor from the very beginning led to a successful revised application with planning approval granted in 2014.
The house is designed as a rendered box that projects over an ashlar limestone base, referencing the materials used in the surrounding area. The rear of the ground floor is largely glazed with a fantastic open plan living, dining and kitchen space overlooking the private garden. There is a further living room and utility/plant area at ground level with a beautiful sculptural oak staircase providing access to a double height gallery and 4 generous bedrooms at the first floor.
The owner was keen to have a modern house in terms of function as well as form and this property was constructed to be very air tight using excellent levels of insulation and Mechanical Heat Recovery Ventilation to provide an optimal internal environment with minimal energy losses.
