This project is a great example that extensions to old buildings can be both fun and strikingly different. Thinking Buildings completed the extension of this former school house in the Old Headington Conservation Area in Oxford. The new building is articulated as a bold yet complimentary new addition to the original stone school house and later 1980’s rear extension.
An existing single story element was demolished and the new extension constructed in its place, to provide a new open plan living space with bespoke kitchen. Large format glazing including a frameless glazed corner, provides connection with the rear walled garden. The previous ground floor aspect was entirely enclosed with few windows and so the extension really opened up the interior to the external spaces.
The first floor extension includes a new master bedroom suite with en-suite bathroom and is zinc clad, dramatically overhanging the sliding doors below, and providing a degree of summer shading.
This project was Highly Commended at the Oxford Preservation Trust Awards in 2017.
