This project in Oxfordshire renovated and extended a beautiful yet dilapidated farmhouse and attached hayloft barn. The rear garden is set half a floor higher than the ground floor, resulting in a property that felt disconnected from the external spaces whilst also suffering from dampness.
Thinking Buildings proposed to build a new staircase to the rear of the property to connect to the rear garden. The extension was constructed in traditional oak frame with large areas of glazing to bring much needed light into the centre of the house.
With the staircase relocated, the remainder of the plan was rationalised to provide modern living accommodation. The ground floor was reconfigured to move the kitchen to the front of the house with better light and views. A new opening with bi-fold doors was made to bring light into the informal living room. On the first floor the space vacated by the existing staircase allowed the family bathroom to be moved upstairs and one of the bedrooms to be significantly enlarged. A new master suite was provided in the converted loft space of the existing hay loft over the formal sitting room.
The overall result is a beautiful family home flooded with both natural light and a great deal of character.
