15 Projects For 15 Years | John Port Spencer Academy Masterplan & Science Expansion.

As we reach the final project in our 15 Projects For 15 Years series, we look back at a project that highlights the importance of planning for the future.

John Port Spencer Academy in Etwall, Derbyshire, provides secondary and post-16 education for more than 2,000 students across a 19-acre green campus.

Working with JPSA and Spencer Academy Trust, Thinking Buildings prepared a Premises Development Plan to explore how the school could accommodate an additional 380 pupil places while making better use of its existing facilities.

The masterplan identified a phased programme of improvements, including extensions to the Sixth Form, a new dining and kitchen building, additional parking and expanded Art and Design facilities. It also identified opportunities to convert underused staff and administrative areas into additional classrooms.

The car park expansion was completed in 2021, following planning approvals secured by Thinking Buildings for the wider masterplan and car park. The Post-16 building received reserved matters approval in 2022.

A phased approach helps the academy plan for growth while managing the practical challenges of development across an active school campus.

This project demonstrates how thoughtful masterplanning can help schools respond to growing demand, make better use of existing spaces and create a clear vision for future development.

As we close our 15 Projects For 15 Years series, it’s a fitting reminder that good design goes beyond individual buildings. It’s about understanding the bigger picture and creating opportunities for the future.

Thank you for joining us on this journey through 15 years of Thinking Buildings.
