This stunning award winning contemporary house was constructed in collaboration with Meisterstück-HAUS, our German off-site manufacturer partner. This project is a great example of the system’s versatility, creating dramatic architecture that fits superbly within its UK setting.
The house is set on a ridge with stunning elevated views over the Kent countryside. The building has been designed with split floor levels and a stepping building form to integrate the new house with the sloping site, and to take advantage of the views and southerly orientation. A large semi-basement constructed from prefabricated concrete panels provides additional accommodation with direct access to the lower garden.
The strikingly modern design has sharp geometric lines, and is composed of 3 main elements; a grass roofed timber clad ‘wedge’ structure, the simpler form and shape of the rendered main core, and the dramatic oversailing first floor. A timber clad workshop and garage echoes the architecture of the main house with a mono pitched grass roof and matching timber cladding.
One of our favourite features of the house is the covered external dining area to the south west corner of the house – taking maximum advantage of the views and sunny orientation. A beautiful and calming place to eat or relax.
The off site manufactured house uses a combination of highly insulated timber frame and panel construction to achieve an extremely energy efficient building solution with very low ‘U-values’ (lots of insulation and minimal heat loss), triple glazed windows, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery system) and very airtight construction.
This stunning low energy house demonstrates how successfully a contemporary design can strongly contrast yet complement its landscape setting.
